Eden Rising

Our God is one who is not easily impressed. The wicked --- they belong here. Those children didn't. That's what you need to understand, Gareth. This place... those things, Satan's soldiers... none of this is real. It's a test. You're all left here, under God's will, because I'm here to shepherd you away. I choose who's worthy enough to move on.

Father Warden explaining his mission to Gareth, No Peace

Father Joseph Warden was a recurring antagonist in Eden Rising, a priest living in the Last Chance Society who claimed that the world they were living in was a purgatory. Under the belief that he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ sent to judge who deserved to "move on" and who deserved to suffer, Father Warden began his own secret society in an elaborate attempt at a coup d'état against the community's leader, John Smith.

HistoryEdit

Pre-seriesEdit

Father Warden became a very respected member of the Last Chance Society, and sometime after the apocalypse, he became convinced that he was the second coming of Jesus Christ, who has been sent down by God to the world - which is now a 'purgatory' - to murder pure souls and send them back to Heaven.

Season 2Edit

Father Warden organized a group of murders at the start of the season, killing the community's six children via lethal injection. Warden used this situation in attempt at a coup d'état, gathering his own secret society of "disciples" who planned on overthrowing Smith and installing Warden as their leader. This secret society is operated behind the back of Gareth, a broken soul in desperate search for redemption, who Warden used to do his dirty work. Warden pampered Gareth and made the man feel special, but in reality, he was only a tool and was planned to be used as his scapegoat.

When Smith decides to run off after hearing an explosion in the forest, one of Warden's spies, an elderly man named Bray is sent with him with the task of killing Smith on the mission. Smith has been onto Warden, but plays along as if he were clueless. Warden's plans also unfurl as Gareth catches onto the Father's true intentions. Warden tasked Gareth with killing John Smith's child Adam, but behind the Father's back, Gareth has Ivy put the baby in hiding. In anger and desperation, Warden manipulated Gareth to finally murder John's lover Libby, leading Gareth to strangle her in the church.

Warden pokes and prods at the community until a violent civil war breaks out between its citizens. Warden and Smith whisk away, with Smith apparently waving the white flag. He took a pompous and overconfident Warden into the basement of the monastery to show the Father a secret, something he must see in order to truly be the new leader of the community. He opened up the door and revealed a plethora of infected. Realizing at the last minute that he let his guard down at the wrong time, Warden was tossed into the room and devoured by infected.

Warden's infected corpse wandered the hallways afterward, apparently "leading the charge" of the other infected once they were all released. It can be assumed that Father Warden's infected corpse was destroyed in the bombing that completely leveled the community shortly thereafter.
