The prologue of World of Anarchy
David sat up in a quick jerking motion gasping for air. Panicking, he quickly scanned the area around him as he tried to calm himself. Couch, coffee table, T.V., PlayStation, Jim’s UNT hat. He was in his dorm. Relief flooded over him as he realized this. He sighed as his breathing returned to normal and ran his hand through his hair.
"It was just another nightmare." He muttered to himself for reassurance like he did most nights.
He wondered if he would ever have an actual night where he would sleep all the way through without night terrors. But he knew the answer was probably not. At least it seemed that way to him. He’s suffered from the nightmares pretty much every night since he was ten and it didn't look like that would be changing anytime soon.
He was alone in his dorm room, sitting up on his couch. The only light in the room came from the lit up T.V. although he could still make out where everything in the dorm was. He still wondered why Jim’s parents had payed for a two room dormitory of this size when he and Jim could live in a normal one. But that was Jim’s parents; always willing to throw around money for their son. He shook his head and turned to the T.V. he just realized he must of accidentally left on. A local news reporter that was probably no more than thirty was on the screen. She was reporting on something going on down at the Denton Regional Medical Center.
He yawned as he stood from the couch and walked to the bathroom. Once inside, he looked at himself in the mirror. His eyes were red and puffy. His gray shirt was wrinkled and clung to his body. He didn't look too good. He sighed and opened the medicine cabinet to grab a bottle of sleeping pills. He held them in his hand as he contemplated whether or not he should take them. In the end he decided against it and instead turned the faucet to splash water on his face. He figured there was no real use in sleeping if he was only going to have a nightmare and decided he should work on homework instead. Or maybe watch T.V. instead. Or play video games.
He dried his face and stumbled back to the couch into the main part of the dorm. As he sat back down getting comfortable again, he noticed Jim’s bedroom door was open.
"Jim?" He called out.
No response. David got up and slowly walked over to the room. He thought back to when they talked earlier as he moved to Jim's door.
"Come on, David. You know it's gonna be fun."
"Yeah, I think I’ll pass."
David and Jim entered their dorm, immediately sitting down on the couch and turning on the T.V. Jim had been trying to convince him for awhile now to go a party happening later that night.
“You sure man?”
“Yeah I'm sure.”
Jim sighed. “Come on bro, we're in college! This is supposed to be the time where we have the time of our lives before, you know, we get jobs and other shit like that.”
“So go to the party.” He told him as he flipped through channels. “I’m not stopping you.”
"I am. I just want you to come and have fun also. Hey, you could end up meeting a girl if you came."
David stared at him blankly before answering. “Yeah...I’m still going with no.”
Jim shook his head. “Alright, fine. But if you need me, I'll be there with Jackie tonight.”
“Speaking of Jackie--Have you asked her yet?” David asked arching one eyebrow.
“Not yet, no. I was thinking about waiting and doing it at the party later.”
David couldn't help but laugh a little. “You going to ask your on-and-off-girlfriend-since-middle-school to marry you there?”
“Like you could think of a better place.”
“Jim, I could think of a thousand better places to propose than a crappy club in the middle of Denton.”
“Then name one mister wiseguy.”
David thought for a moment but couldn't think of any specific place he would suggest. “Okay--You got me there. But really anyplace at all would be better.”
“Eh, whatever.” Jim said as he turned his attention back to the T.V.
Jim's room was empty. No sign he had been there all night. David looked down at his watch.
“Guess he’s still at the club.” He said with a yawn as he walked back over to the couch and plopped down on it.
Reluctantly he began to nod off again. Just as he closed his eyes screaming caught his attention. He jerked awake and saw that the screaming was in fact coming from the new. He slowly sat up straight as he watched the events unfold on the screen.
The hospital on screen was on fire in the background. People were running from the inferno, screaming at the top of their voices. The military rolled up and began shooting into the crowd. The reporter from earlier reappeared on screen, covered in blood. She had what looked like a bite on her shoulder. Two people behind her jumped on top of her, and began to sink their teeth into her. Aside from the two people attacking her the weirdest thing he noticed was their eyes. Their irises were a bright red color. The last last thing heard on the T.V. was the reporters screams of agony before it finally cut to static.
David sat, completely stunned by what he had just witnessed. For a moment he believed that he was asleep. He had to be. No way something like that would happen like that. He sat there staring at the blank screen when a loud banging on the door made him jump to his feet.
“David! Something's wrong with Jenna!” A female voice called to him from the hall that he instantly recognized.
